I opened up the sewing machine yesterday, the cutting board and a bunch of material my friend gave me to practice on. I had already chosen patterns and stuff for the actual quilt I want to make for baby. But before jumping in as I haven't done this before, I did a practice run with the extra leftover material!

My first attempt (on right), I obviously forgot the pattern I wanted the squares in. Twice I sewed on the wrong side, and the measurements were off by half an inch. The second attempt was better. Once again I forgot to make sure that I get the front/back correctly - especially on the pattern square, and only once I sewed on the wrong side. :( By the third one, I did much better.
But I really need to practice sewing straight lines. I start out well, and then half way through the material changes direction! sigh... Plus I need to slow down the sewing speed! Amazing how a few millimeters crooked can affect the overall measure of the block!
And I hate using inches! My friend teaching me has all her cutting boards, rulers with both inches and metric. I wish they sold those kind here. ah well... am just happy that I got started!
