  • There are some new LJ-friends joining! Welcome! I also saw this meme floating around. Figured it would be good timing to do it! I won't be able to do it in continuous succession. Life has suddenly gotten busy (in a good way)!

  • I finished sewing a pair of pajamas!! So, making a tote bag & pajamas for daughter as ordered to do so! They will not be matching-matching!!

  • Still working on the quilt for D. Actually haven't had a chance to do so the last two weeks!

  • Met a homophobe this morning in sewing class, my first! wow... it was shocking! And she went on to preach about finding Jesus. whoa... She was a nice old lady, made it harder to say anything. But I guess that's free speech? I am likely never going to see her again!

  • Will be attending my first funeral, ever in all my life! Being abroad has helped me deal with death very differently. There never is closure and so for me the person lives on the way I saw him/her last. This is going to be sad. It's of someone I have never met, a newborn.

tote bag

Second class of sewing and I finished my very first tote bag!!* woo hoo! So proud! Finished project! It was really fun! I didn't think I would enjoy sewing so much! I had taken up sewing back in high school for one semester (as we were required to take a hobby up every semester). I picked the hardest project one could want to try for the first go, a pair of shorts with four pockets! I was trying to be practical. In Singapore, pajama pants would never be used! Just too hot! So, never got finished and I didn't bother trying to as well.

For the next one, I will add some more depth/height to it. But it was so easy to do!! The class also includes understanding patterns purchased, so that we don't have to memorize everything!

So, am happy I finished one!! By end of the class, we will have sewn up pajama pants! orange & yellow has been my theme for both!! No, am not planning to walk out all coordinated in my pajama pants... the material was on sale!

hmm... now for the next year y'all know what you are getting for birthdays!! :) D has already asked for her own bag!

* It's not a record time or anything!

I opened up the sewing machine yesterday, the cutting board and a bunch of material my friend gave me to practice on. I had already chosen patterns and stuff for the actual quilt I want to make for baby. But before jumping in as I haven't done this before, I did a practice run with the extra leftover material!

P3230003

My first attempt (on right), I obviously forgot the pattern I wanted the squares in. Twice I sewed on the wrong side, and the measurements were off by half an inch. The second attempt was better. Once again I forgot to make sure that I get the front/back correctly - especially on the pattern square, and only once I sewed on the wrong side. :( By the third one, I did much better.

But I really need to practice sewing straight lines. I start out well, and then half way through the material changes direction! sigh... Plus I need to slow down the sewing speed! Amazing how a few millimeters crooked can affect the overall measure of the block!

And I hate using inches! My friend teaching me has all her cutting boards, rulers with both inches and metric. I wish they sold those kind here. ah well... am just happy that I got started!

oh my goodness... we woke up...well, husband is still sleeping in. Who wouldn't on this cold snowy morning. Me however had to get up as my stomach was growling and needed a bathroom run and a few glasses of water. Dude, the kid has already become the boss!

I woke up with great inspiration that we should buy a sewing machine. I think it's much more realistic for me to use that than actually knitting something! I have learnt how to use a machine before and how to measure and sew clothes. Although, the one pair of shorts I had set out to make in high school extra-curricular activity lessons was never actually finished (I only took sewing class for one semester. The teacher never wore a bra and I got tired of trying to avert my eyes everytime she came over to help! You can imagine the fun the boys had, but she really didn't have much to show, and hence the no-bra policy probably, but really someone should tell her not to bend over so much!!!!).

So, I have many dreams of sewing up blankets (which I have experience doing with as well), small tops and bottoms for the baby and already can visualise the dollars saved! Of course, to actually save, I would need to commit doing it for a few years. And I was thinking the alterations I could do like hemming up pants I buy that fit right but are too long! Small stuff. So, I am eagerly awaiting the awakening of my husband to share this big news and watch his face turn in utter bemusement!

Blame it on the snow. There's so much of it! I think we have collected about 8 inches overnight! And it's still snowing!! Maybe later this afternoon we will bundle up and go out! We really are stuck at home this weekend and I am so happy it's with my husband. We haven't had this much time together in months!

I am hungry again.. that banana was only going to give me so much time! I made batter for dosas and it fermented! yay!!! Off to make some coconut chutney and enjoy hot hot dosas in this cold dreary weather!
