Fort Lauderdale - Day 1

On a coldchilly freezing morning, with a few feet of snow piled up on either side of the road, we took a cab to the Baltimore Washington International Airport. For the first time in the two year history I have been here, we had an American drive us, Caucasian to boot! Very friendly and a local guy, shared a lot about his life and how things have changed in the metro-DC area. As many cab drivers, he peppered his talk with religion, politics, philosophy, family story, and life in general. A great start to Christmas morning!
We were eagerly awaiting our flight departure and escape to the warmth of Florida. Luckily by then the airports had cleared up their runways and we were all set to go!
You can still see the snow cover on the non-essential part of the airport. But we didn't care. We could already feel the warmth of sun and the light breeze blowing onto our faces. We landed 2 and half hour later in Fort Lauderdale. MIL wondered if weather had an effect on people and their moods. Surely there must be some truth to it as we had such a friendly shuttle driver who picked us up and drove us to the car rental place! Although who wouldn't want to show off a place to a bunch of visitors still defrosting from the cold North! After picking up the car, we found ourselves driving down to Ft Lauderdale beaches.
Before we could bask in the sun on the beach we got some lunch at a Pizza place - oh it was yummy! Wish I remembered the name of the place. But their pizzas were huge, thin crust and absolutely delicious and the staff were friendly and nice!
And then the beach was all ours! I didn't dare wear a swimsuit with MIL around. I don't think she would have cared, but I was feeling too conscious about it.
The beach then was all ours. Well, there were others of course at the beach. But you know. It was a beautiful day and a perfect day to jump in the water. The water of course though was rather cold! I guess we couldn't have it all.
We spent the afternoon there and by the time we reached Homestead it was well past sunset. We had brought enough packed food of parathas, idlis, pulihore (tamarind rice) to last us a few days - all thanks to MIL! The park didn't have any restaurants or places to eat in it. So we thought we would save time and just have the food prepared! We surely were glad we did!
So we had some of that for dinner and planned out what to do the following day and spent the night playing scrabble! Nice relaxing day to a great week ahead!

Date: 2010-01-14 09:39 pm (UTC)At one time Ft Lauderdale was the place to go for Spring Break - college students go off and get drunk for a week and I think MTV and other entertainment people would have activities there on the beach. But they no longer get that crowd. So, it's trying to get more "sophisticated" or at least more mature clientele.
But as a place to live and all that, I really can't tell.
