I really don't know... we were there but half a day and just at the beach! It's a much smaller place than Miami. I probably would pick Ft Lauderdale over Miami just because of that. It's just half hour away from Miami anyhow. Learn Spanish - it will be more fun ordering food! :) And it has beautiful beaches!
At one time Ft Lauderdale was the place to go for Spring Break - college students go off and get drunk for a week and I think MTV and other entertainment people would have activities there on the beach. But they no longer get that crowd. So, it's trying to get more "sophisticated" or at least more mature clientele.
But as a place to live and all that, I really can't tell.
