O Canada!

Got out of the metro station to get to work and I am surrounded by hundreds of people walking the streets. Majority were students. I wondered when and how DC became the hot spot for spring breakers. Wow what a change in youngsters' interests since I went to college, I thought! ha!

Even the grown ups in formal business attire walking about, you just knew they weren't from around here. They were smiling and looking friendly!! It felt surreal. Then I spotted some with both the US and the Canadian flags in their pockets. Well, of course, they are Canadians. That explains that!

It seems somewhere in the news it got lost that the Canadian PM Trudeau is in town. He's at the White House, two blocks from us right now!!! It was his welcome party! Awesome! I think it's been decades since a Canadian PM visited the capital. I'd imagine there would be more fanfare. Washington post from page has only an article about what he will be eating while here!! I guess all focus is on the elections.

But a welcome to the PM! Wouldn't it be great if he and President Obama walk over for a burger while I am out on a walk at lucnh!? sigh... that would be awesome but never would happen! President Obama is known to hop out for lunch but never when I am out and about! Dang it!

I wonder how many watch the whole SOTU address in its entirety and how many see it through the lens of media analysists - CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc.? I have watched President Bush's last one (my first time since I arrived in 2007), and everyone since then. I missed watching it live twice, but have read the transcript or watched it later. As I am doing now. And until I watch, I don't read any of the stuff, usually on NPR. I always remember Mr. P from my history class's voice urging us to "watch for yourself, judge for yourself, think for yourself, no one can take that away from you, unless you let them."

It goes with any speeches really, even when the RNC and DNC hold their events, I watch C-SPAN. Hubby loves switching from CNN & Fox News. All I hear is shouting and yelling and no one actually sharing the original source. But I also get that not everyone has time to sit and analyse. I feel they have abused the responsibility placed on them. Fox New is entertainment and no further comment from me on them and CNN has stumbled a few too many times in my book to watch.

I don't know the point of this post. I guess I did take a glimpse of CNN this morning when N turned it on. And I am just ranting/rambling.

But before I go.... a funny incident...

Yesterday when the weather was pleasant for a brief day, I took a walk around the block during lunch hour. As I was walking past the Treasury Department (which is by the White House), I saw young group of teenagers intently reading the map. One of them seemed the easier way would be just to ask someone. So, she asked to no one in particular, "Where is the White House?" Two young gentlemen who heard her as they were walking in the same direction behind me responded pointing to the building next door, "It's right there!" in same tone of voice as the teenager.

The teenager looked even more vexed and looked at the map again and went, "but how do we get in?" The two men responded, "you don't!"

And as we kept walking the girl by now was exasperated and yelled, "But we came all the way and want to meet the President!"

Don't we all... heheheheh
