The first three days in Rio de Janeiro N had to attend the conference - the reason for our trip. Those three days, well 2.5 days, I spent it at the beach. Since for this part of the trip we were staying at a nice hotel right at the beach, I got the whole beach chair and umbrella for comfort. Actually I didn't know they had this amenity, and so the first day I laid right on the beach sand, made my own beach chair by piling up sand to make a back rest and enjoyed the day.
I read two books in the two and half days and the third over the week on and off.

- Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella - the book drove me mad. I did like the first few chapters and then it just got ever so annoying. I could relate to the whole hiding from the problem and living in denial but the book stretched too long. Guess she had to. Otherwise it would look like a pamphlet and doubt that would sell as well. And they made a movie out of i? aggh... alhough I think this would make for a far more amusing movie than a book. No, am not a shopper although I enjoy looking at that one gadget or three! ;)
- A Country Called Home by Kim Barnes - I randoly found this book on the library shelf. It looked like an interesting story, and most importantly small enough to carry it in my handbag (Library books often tend to be hardcovers and bulky)! Yes, that was the biggest reason for picking this book! I am glad I did though. A very descriptive book that transformed me from the beaches of Rio to the riverbanks in Idaho. It was a beautifully composed book written in a poetic prose. But not a book to be "enjoyed" at the beach. Such sad characters, each one having lost so much and yet they still carry on.
- Sundays at Tiffany's by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet - I had read James Patterson's The Jester and liked it. I as surprised to see him writing a romance and thought it couldn't be too bad and again it would fit nicely in my hand luggage. Well, it wasn't that bad. Parts of it were fun and made for a good read. But really it was a bit much.
