book recommendations

As I am planning and compiling a list of things for both of us to do and see when we are in Brazil, I also have realised I need to figure out what I will be doing when N is actually attending the conference, the reason we are there for! So, part of the day if not a lot of it, I will be sitting at the beach and admiring the ocean and other distractions that populate the beaches. Since, one can't make that too obvious, I must possess an "excuse" in my hands to keep me looking busy! This is called "the book"!
So, fellow friends and random dropping-in-people: do you have any suggestions of books to take (which I am most likely to find at the local US library) to read? They shouldn't be talking too heavy as I am at the beach with all the beauty! But yet a good read!
p.s. hmmm... i wouldn't mind recommendations for the beach or even otherwise. You guys have made some great recommendations before (still working on that list)! More the merrier! :)
