Dreamers of the Day

As I was reading the previous book, City of Djinns, my interest in that genre tweaked. I was at the library one day and was browsing through their catalogue. This time I wanted something lighter and hence looked to fiction. I typed in the search terms "historic" "novel" and a few titles came up. And there it was listed in the top ten of the first page of results, Dreamers of the Day: A Novel by Mary Dorial Russell. It's good that it clearly states that it's a novel. The writing was so good, it made everything feel so real; I had to keep reminding myself that it was fiction. It was a tough book to put down!
This book took me back to the time of the First World War and then took the story teller to Egypt and other countries in that region, during the time when the boundaries we know today were being created. The story is written so vividly that you felt yourself on the trip along with the story teller! And her thoughts on the situation that the world was in at that time were so aptly put.
It was also quite timely as well. Her description of how Woodrow Wilson dealt with the unpopular war (WWI) fit how Bush Jr is dealing with the Iraq war. You could pretty much just insert the names out and voila!
I would definitely pick up her other books to read! I would recommend anyone interesting to learn about history and in a style that is so easy and light to read (she tried to keep the facts right as much as possible; points out the dates she changed to fit the story in her acknowledgements).
