Book - Harper Lee

smittenbyuIf there was one book I had to pick that left a lasting impression in my teens and beyond it was hers & Anne Frank's diary (OK, that's two). They still send chills down my back. I still remember after reading To Kill a Mockingbird, my utter disbelief that such hatred and mistreatment could be humanly possible, asking my dad if it really was like that. It was crushing to hear the "yes". Disappointing. And realising what a cocoon I had grown up in. After all I was born in a country with just as many problems.
Yes, history classes taught us a lot of history. But it was literature that brought us into their world, their lives, their stories. Where years, dates and leaders' names become the backdrop and the people's stories become the stars.
And that book gave a glimpse of the world back then. So sad to hear the passing away of Harper Lee. But her book has been one of the reasons I still read.
And President Obama said it so well on his FB post.
