shamefully yes... we were so close to changing that in 2009 - and the lower courts did it. Then in 2013 the supreme court reversed the decision and took us back to the dark ages.
The same year, India became the first country to recognize third gender - so transgenders are recognized. It's also because they have played a cultural/historic role in society.
Just baffles me that we were so close and yet set so far back! sigh....
