the lifeguard
Jun. 26th, 2008 06:44 pmOur pool is open from late morning to about when the sunsets. We have a lifeguard. He sleeps through most of the day as there is hardly anyone who goes to the pool during the daytime, at least during noon. There are about 3-4 different lifeguards who take turns to guard the pool. Late afternoon the pool is closed so the lifeguard can take an hour break. I guess it also helps the overzealous sunbathers from over baking under the sun. So far hubby and I have been going to the pool on weekends or in the evenings after he returns from work.
As summer is kicking in in all its shining glory and it's summer break for kids, it gets quite busy in the evenings. Today for the first time I thought for exercise head down to the pool earlier. Where there were two people basking in the sun and one kid in the pool. It was a beautiful day today. Balmy 90F with a cooling breeze; so you didn't really feel the sun's heat but its warmth. Perfect day to just step in a pool (or better yet the ocean). And so I did. I barely got my second foot in and the lifeguard comes up to the two of us (kid and I) saying he's going on break! huh!?
So there I was basking under the sun for fifteen minutes waiting for the lifeguard to come back. It somehow seemed ridiculous. If I chose to swim when the lifeguard isn't around, then it's my choice. I then heard one of the maintenance staff ask one of us where the lifeguard went. We replied in unison "on break". The staff looked puzzled and made a call to someone. Within minutes the lifeguard was arguing that he was told he could go on break for fifteen minutes every two hours.
bah... I couldn't wait. As I was roasting the water was ever so enticing. It was glistening and sparkling under the sun calling my name. So, I went in and had a wonderful swim. The guard came back and he was watching me the whole time. That's his job! ;)
so what comes after a good swim? a good meal... so cooking up something new and baingan (brinjal) bharta with chapatti!
