I saw an image going around FB amongst my Indian friends living in India and almost ignored it as some bogus story. But today I found multiple articles in various media outlets also available. Small step. But a big thing. Maybe Indian courts will come back to their senses. Sigh.

shamefully yes... we were so close to changing that in 2009 - and the lower courts did it. Then in 2013 the supreme court reversed the decision and took us back to the dark ages.

The same year, India became the first country to recognize third gender - so transgenders are recognized. It's also because they have played a cultural/historic role in society.

Just baffles me that we were so close and yet set so far back! sigh....

Mind you though, it's hard for anyone to get caught in India (not to downplay any LGTB people who do get harassed) as it's very common and natural for boys/men to hold hands, being friendly/physically affectionate on a daily basis and not just on the sports field as it seems here in the US.

I was just watching a documentary last night with Stephen Fry, and part of it was in India. The documentary was about how different countries accept those who are gay, it was very interesting , but it was there that I learned about the supreme court decision of 2013....such a step back.

yes, a huge step back! :( The supreme court tried to pass judgement of what the majority thing/feel/represent. But that's not what they are supposed to do!! :(
