beatings

Men in this city seem to be filled with pent up anger & frustration. I guess the traffic, the roads, the chaos does that to anyone, be it a man or a woman. I have seen at least one guy being beaten up/smacked around each day I venture out in the city over some fender-bender. Our driver often comments people drive a bit carefully not to follow rules but in order to keep from being beaten up! It's quite sad really, no really pathetic. A whole gang will congregate to watch the show some more. A country that will not hear you even say something bad about Gandhi, yet many don't seem to follow what he stood for.

I am grateful that the driver my parents have hired is extremely careful! Accidents however will happen and I worry.

In India, while driving it is always safe to follow defensive driving. According to this theory, when you venture out on the road you should believe that you are the only sane driver and all others around are idiots.
Hence you should not only drive carefully yourself but also be on a constant lookout for rash drivers and avoid coming in their way. Anticipation is the name of the game :-)
Cheers!
